Position Description
Background
The Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA) exists to serve the public interest through the regulation of professional speech-language pathologists and audiologists in Alberta. ACSLPA’s regulatory work includes setting admission standards, considering applications for regulated membership and issuing practice permits, creating and enforcing a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, investigating complaints of unprofessional conduct, creating guidelines and practice documents, enforcing continuing competence standards, and more.
General Description
The Audiology Advisor engages with registrants and works collaboratively with ACSLPA staff to both support and advance professional practice in audiology, with a focus on regulatory considerations. The Audiology Advisor addresses registrant inquiries and addresses public inquiries more broadly. They source relevant professional practice resources for registrants and assist in the development and review of key college documents that are informed by evidence, conceptual frameworks, professional standards of practice, and legislated requirements. The Audiology Advisor gains awareness of emerging trends and issues through contact with both registrants and external stakeholders, foresees the impacts they may have on professional practice, conceptualizes solutions, and contributes to the development of proactive plans and strategies by sharing this information with ACSLPA staff. As a member of ACSLPA staff, the Audiology Advisor participates in strategic, operational and regulatory initiatives.
Regulatory training and an orientation will be provided to support the success of the Audiology Advisor in this position.
Duties & Key Responsibilities
- Ensures that ACSLPA provides accurate and timely professional practice advice and support to registrants, particularly audiologists, as part of providing direction and governing regulated members in their professional practice.
- Supports the Registration Committee in the evaluation of applicant qualifications for applicants trained outside of Canadian accredited university programs, particularly for audiologist applicants.
- Ensures that ACSLPA meets the requirements of the Health Professions Act (HPA) and ACSLPA’s key college documents and policy with respect to title enforcement.
- Supports other staff in the development and evaluation of regulatory programs, as requested.
- Works collaboratively to support and contribute to the development of key college documents and ACSLPA’s annual plan.
- Develops materials on regulatory topics for ACSLPA’s website, emails, social media, and other publications/resources.
- Coordinates regulatory projects, as requested.
- Plans and presents regulatory education for registrants and students, as requested.
- Develops and maintains links with the College of Hearing Aid Practitioners of Alberta (CHAPA) and professional associations (e.g., Alberta Association of Audiology (AAA), Canadian Academy of Audiology (CAA), Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC)) on matters of common interest related to professional regulation.
- Represents ACSLPA at meetings with partners, as requested (e.g., Alberta Health Services (AHS) Provincial Audiology Professional Practice Council).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Reporting Requirements
- Provides updates about regulatory work to the Registrar.
- Provides statistical data and trending on type and number of practice advice inquiries, outcomes, and emerging regulatory issues.
- Provides content for the preparation of the Annual Plan, Strategic Plan, Annual Report, Council reporting, and registrant communications, as requested.
- Prepares and presents information to Council, as requested.
Education & Experience
- Requirements

- Degree in Audiology is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience is required.
- Registration with ACSLPA and a valid practice permit are required.
- Awareness of current perspectives on anti-racism, anti-discrimination, cultural safety, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice is required.
- Experience presenting professional development or training is required.
- Experience mentoring, supervising or coaching other professionals is required.
- Preferences (Regulatory training and an orientation will be provided)

- Experience developing standards and policies is not required but would be preferred.
- Previous experience working in a Regulatory College environment is not required but would be preferred.
- Training and/or experience in administration and decision-making, decision writing, labour mobility, foreign qualification recognition, and fairness in accordance with requirements in the HPA, Fair Registration Practices Act, and Labour Mobility Act is not required, but would be an asset.
- Understanding of the HPA, Alberta Human Rights Act, Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP), Health Information Act (HIA), Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Profession Regulation, and their application to the practice of the professions ACSLPA regulates is not required but would be as asset.

- Must speak, read, and write English fluently.
