ACSLPA endeavors to keep fees as low as possible for applicants and registrants while ensuring that the regulatory mandate of the College to protect the Alberta public is achieved. The College’s mission is to regulate the practice of speech-language pathologists and audiologists on behalf of all Albertans by establishing, maintaining, and enforcing standards for competent, safe, and ethical practice.

What does the Health Professions Act (HPA) say about College fees?

  • The HPA allows for the ACSLPA Council to set the College’s fees.
  • Payment of fees prior to registration and renewal is required by the HPA.

A current list of ACSLPA fees is available on the Fee Schedule webpage.

3

For many professional regulators, including ACSLPA, operating costs are covered by fees paid by registrants and applicants.

4

Council reviews and approves the College’s fees and budget annually.

5

ACSLPA’s financial records are audited annually by financial auditors and the results of the audit are presented to Council and can be found in the Annual Report.

6

ACSLPA Council and staff manage costs and keep fees as low as possible by:

  • Working with other Alberta health profession colleges and regulatory colleges across Canada to cost share for common work.
  • Carefully budgeting and monitoring spending and income throughout the year.
  • Constantly looking for cost saving opportunities (e.g., savings on bank fees, insurance and IT costs).

7

Reasons why ACSLPA’s registration and practice permit fees increase:

  • Higher operating costs – For example, additional expenses related to an increasing number and/or complexity of complaints received.
  • Fewer registrants – Since ACSLPA has the same regulatory requirements every year, and therefore the same baseline operating costs, fewer SLPs and audiologists in Alberta result in increased fees.

It is important for registrants and the public to understand how fees are managed. You can learn more about ACSLPA’s work and how fees are spent by reading the College’s Annual Report and Annual Plan and Budget that are available on the ACSLPA website.
