Meet the ACSLPA Team

January 2025

ACSLPA’s team is a group of hardworking individuals, all dedicated to the regulation of audiology and speech-language pathology (SLP) in Alberta. Whether we work part-time, full-time, in our main office space in Edmonton, or remotely from home offices in other areas of the province, we are all actively working to keep the College’s operations running smoothly.

We interact with registrants when they call and email us for information and in our work with Council and committees. We also get to work with applicants as they navigate the registration process and the public when they approach us with their questions and concerns or participate on Council, hearing tribunals and complaint review committees. Interacting with our registrants and the public allows us to learn more about the needs and experiences of the public and registrants and share more about who we are and what we do at the College.

ACSLPA is part of the long tradition of self-regulation and we focus on the regulatory pillars of professional registration, competence and conduct. Regulated members, staff and the public all have roles to play in upholding the pillars of professional regulation and we would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and how we spend our days at the College!

Melanie Sicotte (she/her) – Registrar/CEO

As Registrar/CEO I oversee the work of the College and the implementation of ACSLPA’s Annual Plan. I also monitor changes to health legislation, connect with ACSLPA’s partners, and ensure ACSLPA’s Council, staff and committees have the information and resources they need to protect the public. I have been with ACSLPA in different roles since 2021, and prior to that, I had clinical SLP and leadership roles while working in healthcare, education and private practice, and a career in business. Everyday I have the privilege of learning more about the excellent services being provided to Albertans by ACSLPA’s registrants and ensuring ACSLPA is striving to be a proactive, engaged and solution-focused regulator.

The Regulatory Team

Susan Rafaat (she/her) – Deputy Registrar

I am a longstanding employee of the College and a registered SLP. My current responsibilities focus on regulatory matters, including registration, continuing competence, and professional practice webinars and support, particularly for SLPs.  I welcome you to reach out with questions or to discuss challenging professional situations you encounter.

Renae Phillips (she/her) – Audiology Advisor

I recently moved to Canada from Australia. As the newest member of the ACSLPA team, I am growing into my role providing professional practice support and webinars, responding to title protection concerns, ensuring ACSLPA is engaged with Alberta audiologists, and assisting with the College’s continuing competence program and the registration of applicants educated outside of Canadian accredited programs.

Susan Kraft (she/her) – Senior Regulatory Coordinator

As the Senior Regulatory Coordinator I deal with all aspects of the College’s registration activities and manage the Member Login Area (Alinity). This is my sixteenth year with ACSLPA so most registrants have likely received many emails from me, and we may have talked over the years.

Paula Martin (she/her) – Regulatory Coordinator

As the Regulatory Coordinator I  am involved in the implementation of the registration, renewal, reinstatement, and continuing competence processes of  the College. I respond to communications received by phone, email and the Contact Us form, and ensure applicants, registrants and the public get connected to a member of staff who can assist them.

The Regulatory and Ops Team

Sharia Ali (she/her) – Professional Conduct & Regulatory Advisor

For 3 years I was the SLP Advisor at ACSLPA but in November 2024, I took on this new role. In the Professional Conduct  area I ensure fair, consistent management of complaints and discipline processes in compliance with the applicable legislation.  As the Regulatory Advisor, I am responsible for supporting the College’s regulatory work in the areas of key college documents, Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, and Accessibility (IDEA), and registration of applicants educated outside of Canadian accredited programs.

The Ops Team

Shelly Monson (she/her) – Senior Operations Coordinator

I have been on the ACSLPA team for over 10 years! My position has changed greatly over the years and I have taken on more responsibilities. I maintain and create content, including courses, for the website, work with the team to keep registrants informed through our monthly Essentials email and other regulatory communications, create the annual report, revise and format college documents, and ensure ACSLPA branding is maintained. That’s the fun stuff. I also dabble in HR, OH&S, and bookkeeping.

Mckenzie Henze (he/they) – Operations Coordinator

I joined the ACSLPA team in 2021 and have become a bit of a jack-of-all-trades around the office. Currently, my days are occupied with IT management, coordinating council meetings, and assisting the Complaints Director with her work. I have a BSc in chemistry but these days the only hot water extractions I do are to keep the office well stocked with coffee!

Tricia Gherbaz (she/her) – Operations Coordinator & Hearings Director

I have a BHSc in Public Health, and my position at ACSLPA has been a perfect transition to exploring health policy within the field of health profession regulation. As an Operations Coordinator, I support a range of governance activities, organize council committee meetings, and provide administrative assistance to the CEO. As Hearings Director, I manage administrative processes for hearing tribunals and complaint reviews in compliance with the applicable legislation.

That is a quick overview of who we are. We are here to assist you through the twists and turns of regulation, registration, renewal, conduct, etc. Reach out, we want to engage with you.
